what a lovely cozy post this was!
i am mad jealous you have a wood burning stove. it was one of my favorite actitivities back in Michigan – cold January nights and a cup of cocoa and a fire going.

You make it sound so romantic to live in the woods–’cause the last time I heard the phrase “We got WOOD” it had an entirely different meaning.

I miss our outings into the forests of California to gather heating fuel for the winter. You *may* want to save some larger pieces to the fires don’t burn down too quickly, so you can put one in just before bed to keep some heat going through the night.

If you guys are going to be living where you’re at permanently, it would be worth investing in a few tools (the wood splitter is a good start) so you can go get permits from the forest service and gather your own wood.

Nothing like working all day gathering the wood, bringing it home, stacking it, and then jumping in the river to cool-off.
